 State Roads on Long Island
In 1957, the Suffolk County Planning Department proposed to the New York State DPW that NY 114 be widened into a divided, four-lane arterial highway.
Proposed in the 1960's by New York State, the Setauket Bypass was designed to avoid congestion along NY 25A in Setauket, East Setauket and Port Jefferson.
The Nassau County segment of NY 878 is separated from the Queens segment by the unsigned Rockaway Boulevard in Queens, and Rockaway Turnpike in Nassau County.

 Empire State Roads
Most reference routes are state highways like any other, except that they are not marked as touring routes for use by the motoring public.
The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) also assigns reference route numbers to facilities maintained by other state-level agencies (such as the New York State Thruway Authority).
Regulations concerning reference markers were revised a few years ago, and were outlined in the Reference Marker Manual published by NYSDOT for use by Region officers and crew.

Interstate 787 begins at the interchange and runs toward the right, where it is joined by reference route 912S.
A half-diamond serves traffic to and from the Thruway, while the remaining connections are made by way of reference route 912S and an entrance ramp from US 9W northbound.

The building, designed by Isaac Perry and constructed in 1889, is a fine example of armory architecture that was popular in upstate New York in the late 1800’s.
