In the case of this play and the New York Theatre Workshop, the most worrisome, angering and depressing aspect of the situation is its undoubted self-censorship, which is the worst kind of censorship: we needn't discuss the approach of the chilling effect any more, we are now frozen into paralysis.
New York's independent theater scene has been slow to come to the public defense of either the play or Nicola's decision, and I sense that this is because of the insular nature of downtown theater, where everybody works with each other, where opportunities are few and tempers and sensitivities run high.
The New York Theatre Workshop, in particular, maintains casual relationships with hundreds of New York theater artists, who no doubt enjoy their support from the theater or hope to work there in the future.

This is especially true in New York, where his new play, The God of Hell, has just finished a run and where he now has returned to the boards in Caryl Churchill's A Number.
This story of human cloning - Shepard has long evinced a fascination for science fiction in his own work - is told in abbreviated dialogue that suits a persona as averse to overripe articulateness as its star: A Number unfolds in a kind of Future Speak.

It's a familiar tale, and this time the subject is My Name is Rachel Corrie, a one-woman play the New York Theatre Workshop may or may not be putting on about an activist for Palestinian causes who was crushed to death by an Israeli bulldozer during a protest three years ago.
It's obvious that the New York Theatre Workshop doesn't like controversy, but controversy is at their front door and they need to snap out of the deer-in-the-headlights position.
If the New York Theatre Workshop can't rise to the occasion and develop this situation into an opportunity to further the Israeli-Palestinian dialogue in New York City and in the world -- and this is the opportunity that faces them now -- then they are in the wrong business.
