The aim of the Sea Cadet Corps is to provide adventure, challenge, and fun for boys and girls aged 12 to 18 (or 10 to 12 for Dolphins), to complement their home and school education and to give them a head start.
Cadets are members of the New Zealand Cadet Forces which promote an awareness of the Armed forces and the role they play in the community.
The organisation is not part of the New Zealand Defence Force, but is administered by the NZDF and is supported in partnership by the Community, the Government, and the Defence Force.

Cadet training therefore became compulsory and a number of Cadet Battalions and Territorial Regiments were raised to cater for youths who had left school before they had completed their training in the Cadet Corps.
The New Zealand Cadet Corps was established as an integral part of the New Zealand Armed Forces in 1948, in the same year the Armed Forces Cadet Committee and the Cadet Advisory Committee, both of which are responsible to the Chiefs of Staff Committee, were established.
The Air Training Corps was founded in New Zealand in March 1941 at a time when the Dominion of New Zealand stood in grave danger of invasion from the Japanese, and with the United Kingdom in a position where she could not help.

The Cadet Forces are a community-based youth training organization aimed at teaching leadership, comradeship, self-confidence and citizenship to both boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 18 years of age.

New Zealand Cadet Corp (the army-based corp) is one of the three corps that make up the New Zealand Cadet Forces.
In addition to Cadet Courses, once a cadet has decided to continue with the unit as an adult, or an adult/parent wishes to significantly contribute, there are Officer Courses run by the NZCF as well.

 NZDF - The Cadet Forces Medal
Service on or after the 1st day of July 1971 as a cadet aged 18 years or more in any of the cadet forces of New Zealand or in any officially recognised cadet forces of any other Commonwealth country of which the Queen is head of State.
These regulations, which come into force on the 28th day after the date of their notification in the Gazette, revoke and replace the New Zealand Cadet Forces Medal Regulations 1969.
More significantly, the new regulations add to the kinds of service that may be counted towards qualifying service, service as a cadet aged 18 years or more in any of the cadet forces of New Zealand or any Commonwealth country of which the Queen is head of State.

The uniform worn by NZCC members is the same as that of the New Zealand Army, except that for all ranks, the lettering on the bottom of the rank insignia shoulder boards reads CADET FORCES rather than NEW ZEALAND to differentiate NZCC personnel from New Zealand Army personnel.
Officers are commissioned into the New Zealand Cadet Forces, with the post-nominal letters NZCF, at the rank of Second Lieutenant, and can be promoted to Lieutenant, Captain or Major after completing the necessary training and service.
