Though Fitzpatrick was criticised from time to time, and even in his younger days by Hart, for sometimes over-aggressive play and for gamesmanship, his mark on New Zealand rugby has been immense.
Fitzpatrick played the first test against Australia while the Cavaliers were still ineligible but lost his place for the remaining domestic tests.
When Fitzpatrick missed the first test of the tour, against Ireland, it was the first time in his career he could not be considered for a test because of injury - a remarkable testimony to not only his durability, but also his preparation and professionalism.

By the beginning of 1990, however, Shelford's form was not as dominant as it had been and after two tests against Scotland he was dropped, prompting a public outcry.

Rugby had been segregated in South Africa from the time the sport was introduced to the Cape Colony in the 1860s, a divide formalised with the introduction of apartheid in 1948.
South Africa's white rugby team, known as the Springboks since their 1906 tour to the United Kingdom, played their first test match in 1891 but in the subsequent 101 years to rugby unity fielded only two blacks among the 557 players named as Springboks.
