All census forms are hand delivered by census workers during the lead-in to the census, with one form per person and a special form with questions about the dwelling.
The first full census in New Zealand was conducted in 1851, and the census was triennial until 1881 at which time it became five-yearly.
The 2006 census was held on Tuesday 7 March.

Cromwell is a town in Central Otago in the Otago region of New Zealand.
Since the construction of the Clyde Dam and the filling of Lake Dunstan in the early 1990s the river confluence was drowned, as was the old town centre.
According to the 2001 New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings, the permanent resident population of Cromwell was 2667, an increase of 54 since 1996.

New Zealand researchers in the field of multiple sclerosis report a growing incidence of this disease among Maori and speculate that this may be due to the mixing of genes with people who have European ancestry (Dominion Post 2003).
Although it is not considered appropriate for Statistics New Zealand to continue to have a statistical standard that includes prioritisation, it may be useful for agencies to consider whether there is a viable and agreed prioritisation system that could be maintained by one agency on behalf of others for their use.
New Zealand ethnicity data needs to be carefully scrutinised by policy makers, and the media, in order to better assess what factors may result in individuals facing disadvantage and how policy should be designed to overcome such disadvantage.

The Census of Population and Dwellings is the primary source of information on the size, composition, distribution, economic activities and state of well-being of the population.
Census data are used for analysing trends, planning public services and allocating public funds in the areas of health, housing, transport, education, income and law and order.
Census figures are also the basis of population estimates and projections, which are critical to many planning and policy-related activities, such as allocation of health funds.

The survey was commissioned by 12 of New Zealand’s cities and districts, in partnership with the Ministry of Social Development, to monitor trends in wellbeing.
The New Zealand data was drawn from nine surveys and the overall score of 9.6 was within a confidence range of 9.4-9.6.
To be selected, a group needed to have: a New Zealand resident population of over 2,000 people; a broad age distribution to investigate the impact of age on language retention; and sufficient numbers born in New Zealand to make meaningful comparisons with overseas-born residents.

The Research, Analysis and Information Unit is developing experience on measuring the prevalence of homosexuality in quantitative social research, sexual orientation concepts and definitions, potential sources of bias and interpretation of data on homosexuality.
The Unit has also analysed data relating to same-sex cohabiting couples in the New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings, and is a strong advocate of the need to include variables on sexual orientation in health research where appropriate.
