		Colonel William Wakefield, the Company's principle agent, claimed to have purchased 20 million acres, mainly in the middle districts of New Zealand, but his methods did not always meet close examination and on occasions he had not enquired into the bona fides of the Maori people prepared to sell.
		Lord John Russell, the new Colonial Secretary, decided to recognise the Company as an instrument of government in the colonisation of New Zealand and it was granted a charter of incorporation and a generous land title.
		New Plymouth lacked a suitable harbour, the available land was limited, the survey incomplete and trouble with the Maori was to be a never-ending problem.

		AUCKLAND, New Zealand (CNN) -- The owner of a New Zealand cargo company who sent Iraqi president Saddam Hussein's stepson to flight school in Miami denied knowing Saturday that a student visa was required, as did an official at the school.
		Mohammad Nour al-Din Saffi, 36, is expected to be deported from the United States because of the error, which the company owner and school official said was a simple mistake.
		Saffi, a New Zealand national who holds a flight engineering license in New Zealand, is being held at the Krome Detention Center in Miami-Dade County.

	New Zealand chemical company denies Agent Orange claims
		A New Zealand company at the centre of allegations it supplied Agent Orange chemicals during the Vietnam War said Monday the claims were false.
		A government minister was quoted in a weekend newspaper as acknowledging Agent Orange ingredients, produced in New Zealand by chemical company Ivon Watkins Dow (now called Dow AgroSciences), were exported to a US military base in the Philippines during the Vietnam war.
		Initial findings suggested that New Zealand had not breached the Geneva Convention as the article prohibiting the use of Agent Orange was not in force in New Zealand until 1987.

		Wellington - A New Zealand company was fined Wednesday in a landmark case for failing to provide a safe working environment after a woman employee had a break-down from work-related stress.
		The woman, who was not named in a department statement after the court hearing, suffered mental and physical harm in the form of depression and hypertension as the direct result of work pressures and poor organisation, national operations manager Mike Cosman said.
		Cosman said being busy or challenged, or working long hours, were not bad things, but the company failed to protect the worker, whose workload was making her ill, and that was a clear breach of the law.
