A fierce takeover battle for National Foods between San Miguel and Fonterra could be nearing its end after Philippines brewer San Miguel said it was considering a bid for New Zealand Dairy Foods, which is valued at $NZ750 million ($703 million).
NZDF is a consumer dairy business owned by New Zealand businessman and Burns Philp chairman Graeme Hart, who has been soliciting offers.
NZDF is a cheaper buy than National Foods, which has a market capitalisation of $1.9 billion, and there are no rivals on the scene so far.

Dairy Farmers of New Zealand chairman Kevin Wooding said Fonterra shareholders were pleased with the decision to withdraw the bid.
As for the New Zealand market, Wellington's The Dominion Post newspaper reported yesterday that Graeme Hart's New Zealand Dairy Foods, estimated to be worth at least $NZ700 million ($650 million), had also been sold to San Miguel.
If San Miguel did succeed in acquiring both National Foods and NZ Dairy Foods, it would be forced by NZ competition rules to sell some assets, as it would own 80 per cent of the soft dairy market.

Food group Burns Philp & Co Ltd is set to acquire New Zealand Dairy Foods Pty Ltd from its largest shareholder, Graeme Hart, and float the Kiwi dairy business along with its baking and spreads divisions.
Burns Philp on Thursday said it had reached a conditional agreement to acquire New Zealand Dairy Foods from Mr Hart's privately-owned company, Rank Group, which gained ownership of the assets in a recent buy-swap exchange with Kiwi dairy co-operative Fonterra.
The new company will take its name from Goodman Fielder, the under-performing food group that Burns Philp acquired in 2003 for $1.9 billion, giving the former spice-maker its portfolio of consumer brands.

New Zealand dairy company Fonterra has reached an agreement to acquire a range of assets from New Zealand Dairy Foods (NZDF), including the Anchor Milk and Fresh'n'Fruity yogurt brands.
Assets acquired by Fonterra from NZDF are valued at NZ$754 million and the assets acquired by NZDF from Fonterra are valued at NZ$416 million.
NZDF said it recognized the logic of Fonterra's strategy and while NZDF was acquiring a business with a lower profit base, it considered the Meadow Fresh and Kiwi Meats businesses to be very well run operations and well positioned in the New Zealand market.
