The first cast iron lighthouse to be prefabricated in New Zealand, this is the landfall light for vessels arriving in Auckland from the east.
The lighthouse marks the easternmost point of New Zealand; it is claimed (plausibly) that this lighthouse, not far west of the International Date Line, is the first lighthouse to see the sunrise of a new day.
The tower was prefabricated in New Zealand by Judd's Foundry of Thames.

Like its New York namesake Newmarket's Broadway developed a rather bright Moderne flashy image in the 1930s and 1940s and by the 1960s the biggest collection of neon signs in the country.
A significant change to the skyline was the Viaduct erected in 1965 to take one of the early sections of the Southern Motorway over the railway and half a dozen streets.
The new motorway system opened up the new industrial suburbs to the south such as Penrose, Mount Wellington etc. This resulted in much of the local industry moving out of Newmarket and along with it many of the working class people who lived in modest houses in the surrounding streets.

As these barracks will be a key focus of the second phase of the dig, insights into these new arrivals and how they adjusted to living in a very different land are hoped to be gleaned, he says.

The New Zealand Historic Places Trust is to receive $3 million this financial year for the establishment of a Historic Places Preservation Fund, and an increase in its operational funding.
The new government has halted the destruction and is now rebuilding the Historic Places Trust.

There are very few places left in New Zealand where the actual wards where mental patients were accommodated, can be seen as they were during their period of optimum use when the emphasis was on moral reform at one end of the spectrum, and physical restraint at the other.
In this respect the place is not simply representative of mental health care planning as it was ninety years ago, but is special and outstanding insofar as examples of such specialised facilities are rare in New Zealand today.

Rangiātea received new foundations, and the three central pillars and heavy wall slabs (all of which were near collapse) were strengthened.
The floor was lifted, 12 new buttresses were affixed, a new iron roof was added, and repairs were made to the bell and belfry.

This site is of national importance as the origin of the frozen meat industry in New Zealand.
The first shipment of frozen meat was organised, killed here at Totara, and carried by train to Dunedin (Port Chalmers) where it was frozen in the hold of the sailing ship Dunedin of the Albion Shipping Line, in February 1882.
The success of this initial shipment formed the basis of New Zealand's meat industry and overseas markets.

With registration of the Historic Area, the New Zealand Historic Places Trust is deemed an "affected party" to all Resource Consents in the Area.
