In 1987, the Order of New Zealand was instituted as the supreme New Zealand honour.
Knights in the New Zealand Order of Merit were and remain entitled to use 'Sir' or 'Dame' as appropriate, and the wife of such a knight who uses her husband's surname is entitled to the courtesy title 'Lady'.
The Governor-General of New Zealand is the Prior in New Zealand.

Queen Elizabeth II instituted the Order by Royal Warrant significantly dated February 6, 1987 (Waitangi Day) "to recognise outstanding service to the Crown and people of New Zealand in a civil or military capacity".
It was deliberately and explicitly modelled after the Order of Merit and the Order of the Companions of Honour [1].
The order is limited to the Sovereign and twenty members, however there are also additional and honorary members which are not counted towards the limit.

The New Zealand Order of Merit is an order of chivalry established on 30 May 1996 by Elizabeth II.
This was criticised by opposition parties, with Richard Prebble of the ACT New Zealand party deriding the PCNZM's initials as standing for 'a Politically Correct New Zealand that used to be a Monarchy'.
The central disc has the Coat of Arms of New Zealand, surrounded by a ring in green enamel bearing the Motto of the Order, and topped by a royal crown.
