The Republican Coalition of New Zealand is formed by a group of students at Victoria University -- James Shaw, Jonathan Milne, Deborah Morris, Dave Guerin, Evan Roberts, Tomas Kriha, Rebecca Schofield, Bevan Blair, Simon Sheppard and Savage.
The Third New Zealand Study of Values is released, showing support for a republic doubling from 16.2 per cent in 1989 to 33.3 per cent in 1998 -- not far behind the 38.6 per cent opposed to a republic.

The anti-military, peace-at-all-costs mentality which infiltrated the party in the late 1960's and early 1970's has finally grown to maturity and solidified to the point where not even an event as dramatic as September 11, 2001 causes much more than a ripple among the party elite and the activist base.
When smart Republicans are content with flabby, cartoonish assessments of the opposition, it suggests to me that they are ready to be beaten by a Democrat who can break out of the cartoonish image (as Clinton did in 1992).
