  Peter Fraser Summary
Peter Fraser (1884-1950) was a prominent socialist and Labour party politician of New Zealand.
Both New Zealand and Australia came to realize that the strategic and military role of the United States was as crucial in their area as it had been in Europe; and both accepted the challenge to participate in bringing about an improved postwar pattern in the Pacific.
John A. Lee, a notable socialist within the Party, vehemently disapproved of the party's perceived drift towards the political centre, and strongly criticised Savage and Fraser.

 World Socialist Party - History
It is a sad proof of the socialist contention that the Russian revolution put the clock back as far as the growth of the socialist movement is concerned that the Association ceased in 1922, and that it was not for another eight years that socialists in New Zealand organised themselves again.
The new SPNZ tried to get workers to recognise that it was the private ownership of the means of production that was the cause of their problems, and that only Socialism was the solution.
On the political field, the Party exposed the claims of Labour to be able to govern in the workers' interests, and of the Communist Party that socialism was being built in Russia, both of which were popular views at that time, but are now discredited.

Labour was seen as the party of the working class for decades; a social democratic party that was considered the chief author of the welfare state, one of the most extensive in the world.
New Zealand was held up internationally as a model for the free market agenda, surpassing even the neo-liberal 'experiment' in Chile under the vicious right wing dictator, Agusto Pinochet.
The party did at least oppose the sending of SAS troops to Afghanistan (the Labour/Alliance government and the Nationals were assured to pass the legislation), building its credit with young radical voters.
