New Zealand elections - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
New Zealand general elections occur when the Prime Minister requests a dissolution of parliament and therefore a general election.
New Zealand currently has sixty-nine electorates (including seven Maori electorates, reserved for people of Maori ethnicity or ancestry who choose to place themselves on a separate electoral roll).
New Zealand claims to have become the first country in the world to have granted women's suffrage, although the accuracy of this claim depends on the definitions used - see women's suffrage.

Election Resources on the Internet: Elections to the New Zealand House of Representatives
Fifty-five percent of the electorate took part in the vote, in which a proposal to establish a new electoral system was overwhelmingly approved in the first part of the referendum, with 1,031,257 votes (84.7%) in favor, against 186,027 votes (15.3%) for retaining the existing system.
Electorate seats are filled by the plurality or first-past-the-post method, under which the candidate obtaining the largest number of votes in each constituency is elected.
The electorate seats won by a party at the constituency level are then subtracted from the total number of seats allocated to that party's list, and the remaining seats are filled by the candidates on the party list in the order determined before the election.

Electorates & members of parliament : Reviewing electorate numbers and boundaries
Electorates are meant to have similar populations living in them, regardless of how large or small this ends up making the area an electorate covers.
Because the population of the electorates is meant to be similar, the numbers of Maori electorates and North Island electorates are calculated by dividing the relevant electoral populations by the South Island quota.
New Zealand's total population (not just electors) needs to be divided into Maori, South Island and North Island electoral populations for calculating electorate numbers and the population covered by each.

Prevalence of Adult Asthma Symptoms in Relation to Climate in New Zealand
New Zealand is an ideal setting for the purposes of this investigation because the climate ranges from subtropical in the north to subarctic in the south.
Where electorates still lacked data for one or more climate variables, these values were assumed to be the same as for an adjacent electorate, chosen by reference to a map of the electorate boundaries, without knowledge of the values for the climate variables there.
Consistent with this, the lowest asthma prevalence was found in electorates in the highest quartile of altitude, the lowest quartile of urban land use, and the highest quartile of land area (therefore of low population density, as the electorates have similar total populations).

Observers have devoted considerable attention to New Zealand's 1993 decision to switch its parliamentary elections from the Anglo-American method of plurality voting in single-member districts to a German-style, mixed-member proportional system.
