Animal farm is Orwell's recreation of society in the shape of a farm, in which the animals overthrow their leaders, and inevitably recreates itself into the society it overthrew in the first place.
Many passages in Animal Farm reminded me of 1984, with the 'enemy always changing', and the secrete police (dogs) keeping people in check, and the leaders (pigs) making themselves indispensable, and always quoting figures of how life was improving, while rewriting the past (the commandments) to reflect whatever was convenient at that period of time.
He goes through thousands of names, many of which were new to me. But he was in the trenches, and he knows what he is talking about.
