ACT New Zealand, National's more right-wing neighbour, failed to capitalize on the exodus of National supporters, retaining the same number of seats as before.
The other was United Future New Zealand party, a centrist party based on a merger of the United Party and the Future New Zealand party - primarily due to the performance of leader Peter Dunne, the party shot from having one seat to having eight seats.

United Future was formed to contest the New Zealand general election 2002 from the merger of centrist party United New Zealand and Christian-dominated conservative Future New Zealand.
Future New Zealand, which was not represented in parliament, was a secularised evolution of the New Zealand Christian Democratic Party, following the same basic principles as the Christian Democrats, but abandoning the explicit religious connection.
In the New Zealand general election 1999 United gained 0.5% of the vote but Peter Dunne won his electorate seat, while Future gained 1.1% of the vote.

In the 2002 general election, six parties, namely the Labour Party, the National Party, the New Zealand First Party, ACT New Zealand, the Green Party and United Future, won at least five percent of all valid party votes cast.
In the third MMP general election, held four months early in July 2002, Labour remained by far the largest party but fell short of an absolute majority in the House of Representatives, while the Alliance lost its parliamentary representation.
However, this trend was reversed in the fourth MMP general election, held in September 2005.

It will be the third election under the country’s “Mixed Member Proportional” representation system, and the third election in which I will have had the honor of voting.
Perhaps it’s just that I’m not old enough to remember a similar case, but this election campaign feels very odd, because it’s one where the main opposition party — the National Party — has practically no chance of winning.
So what interests me this election is the possibility of “soft” ACT supporters switching their votes to National in an attempt to save National from complete ignominy, leaving ACT sinking under the five percent threshold.
