A postal code (known in various countries as a post code, postcode, or ZIP code) is a series of letters and/or digits appended to a postal address for the purpose of sorting mail.
Postal services often have their own distinctive formats and placement rules for postal codes (service areas, as a rule, are defined by national borders).
Since 1977, New Zealand has had a system of four-digit codes which were only required on mail sent in bulk, but in June 2006, a new system was introduced, which was required for all mail.

New Zealand postal addresses - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
New Zealand's post code system was introduced in June 2006, and unlike the previous system, is required for all items of mail, whether sent from within the country, or from overseas.
Post codes were first introduced in New Zealand in 1977, but these were used entirely for pre-sorting large volumes of mail in bulk, similar to the Mailsort system used by Royal Mail in the United Kingdom.
New Zealand Post did not require individual items of mail to include the post code in the address, as optical character recognition (OCR) enabled automated sorting machines to scan entire addresses, rather than just post codes, as is the case with older machines.

REPORT BY THE PRIVACY COMMISSIONER TO THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE ON THE POSTAL SERVICES BILL
The fact that generations of New Zealanders have had their private correspondence carried by a public body does not of itself provide a convincing reason to oppose private operators carrying correspondence in the future.
New private postal operators will need to demonstrate an impeccable ethic of respect for the integrity of the mail but it is the task of this bill to ensure that the law backs that up.
As with private boxes that New Zealand Post operates in the city, it is quite likely that postal operators which are respectful of their customer's privacy would leave it to the customer to choose whether they wished to go into a directory or not.

Every postal service (usually having their service area defined by national borders) has a different format and placement for the postal code.

Chinese New Year will be here soon, arriving with the new moon on February 8th or 9th depending on your location.
One of the things I like best about Chinese New Year is that it provides a second chance to catch up on all those things we meant to get done before the Jan. 1 New Year, but didn't quite get to.
In the Chinese Lunar Calendar, the New Year marks the start of Spring, so it's a good time for "spring cleaning" even if the weather is still wintry in your part of the world.
