New jack swing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
New jack swing is a hybrid style of rhythm and blues (RandB) combined with hip hop, popular from the late 1980s to early/mid-1990s.
Its sound is a blend of the sporadic hip hop "swing" beats (so called because of the extreme use of rhythmic improvisation), which were popular during the golden age of hip hop, with contemporary randb style singing.
New jack swing is also known for its aggression, swaggering and addressing romantic themes and lyrics.

 New Jack Swing
New Jack Swing emerged in the latter half of the decade, reaching a zenith around 1990, with the huge success of Bell Biv Devoe’s single Poison.
The term “swing” referred to the rhythm, which often employed a combination of straight 8ths, 16th-note shuffles, and 16th-note swing patterns (in Europe, the music was sometimes known as Swingbeat and this name survives in the Netherlands, which for some reason is a stronghold of New Jack Swing fandom).

New Edition - Biography - AOL Music
New Edition's early, Jackson 5-inspired material made them the forerunners of two generations of teen pop (most of which was geared to white audiences).
In fact, after New Edition drifted apart, all of its members had at least some significant success outside the group as part of the new jack movement, which helped ensure that their original incarnation would be remembered for much more than the bubblegum urban soul that made their name.
New Edition was formed in the Roxbury section of Boston, MA, by Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Bobby Brown, who began singing together in 1978 while still in elementary school, hoping to perform for pocket cash.

 The New Jack Swing Era
New Jack Swing emerged in the latter half of the decade, reaching a high point some time around 1990 with the huge success of Bell Biv Devoe’s single Poison.
The same year saw the release of the Wreckx-n-Effects track New Jack Swing, another possible source for the name; in either case, it seems clear that 1991's mainstream press frenzy was symptomatic of the genre's quick slide into irrelevance.
New Edition gave Michael Bivins the experience that he’d use to groom ABC and Boyz II Men: the family seed must be perpetuated.

New jack swing is a hybrid style of rhythm and blues (RandB) or soul music combined with hip hop, popular from the late 1980s to early/mid-1990s.
Also called "new jack RandB" or "swingbeat", the term was coined either by journalist and New Jack City co-writer Barry Michael Cooper or music artist/producer Teddy Riley who invented this style in the experiment of integrating hip-hop rhythms, samples and production techniques with the urban contemporary RandB sound.
New jack swing is mellifluously soulful solo or harmonizing vocals sung over funky, rap rhythms.

New Jack Swing evolved in the late '80s, when urban contemporary soul artists began incorporating hip-hop rhythms, samples, and production techniques into their sound.
Although not as well-known as other New York hip-hop acts of the early '80s, Staten Island's Force M.D.'s were a vital crew in the early history of street hip-hop and one of the first vocal groups to fuse doo wop-influenced harmonies with hip-hop beats.
Picking up from New Edition and especially New Kids on the Block, who were subsiding just as they emerged, Color Me Badd, along with Boyz II Men, was the teen-oriented male vocal group of their day, complete with hype, videos, silly haircuts, and four interweaving mediocre tenor voices.

Bobby Brown - Biography - AOL Music
One of the brightest R&B stars of the late '80s and early '90s, Bobby Brown was the man who popularized new jack swing, a blend of classic soul, urban synth-funk, and hip-hop rhythms that often featured rap breaks in between the conventionally melodic verses and choruses.
Just before his new album, Bobby, was released in the summer of 1992, Brown married superstar diva Whitney Houston, who sang the duet "Something in Common" on the new record.
Upon his release, Brown began working in earnest on a new album, which was derailed for a time when he suffered a seizure in the summer of 2001, reportedly from heat exhaustion and dehydration.

Jack sounds too much like a cross between KBIG and Arrow to me. The station promises a wide range of music and prides itself on "trainwrecks" between wildly different songs, but I don't hear it.
Perhaps Jack is as he states, and not as eclectic as similar formats in other markets, but it's damn near the most interesting mix of music I've heard since KSCA, and with far broader and deeper a playlist than KBIG and Arrow combined.
Jack is the playlist on our iPods and iTunes that we NEVER set to "Share." They play Ratt, and we like it, even if we dare not share that dark secret with even our significant others.

One of the most seminal and influential releases of late '80s, Guy 's self-titled debut album did more than its part to popularize new jack swing, a style that would soon become inescapable on urban contemporary radio.
Teddy Riley didn't actually invent new jack swing with Guy -- he'd already gotten the ball rolling on Keith Sweat 's 1987 debut Make It Last Forever -- but this album did more than any other to make it so incredibly popular in the RandB world.
With their tough blend of hip-hop, RandB, and Gap Band -influenced funk, hits like "Groove Me" and "Teddy's Jam" defined new jack swing and served as the blueprint for countless new jack recordings in the late '80s and early to mid-'90s.

Teddy Riley (new jack swing) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Teddy Riley (born Edward Theodore Riley, October 8, 1967 in Harlem, New York) is an American RandB and hip hop singer, songwriter, musician and producer who was the ring leader of the most influential groups of RandB in two separate decades - Guy in the 80s and Blackstreet in the 90s.
Riley is mostly responsible for making a successful fusion of hip-hop and RandB in the late 1980s which was called New Jack Swing.
At the start of 2006, Riley started the New Jack Swing revival, with the New Jack reunion tour, featuring acts, in addition to BLACKstreet and Guy, After 7, SWV and Tony Toni Toné.

Effectively revolutionizing '80s R&B by appealing to a younger audience raised on hip-hop and MTV, new jack swing married careening vocals and urban music's increasingly silky production to brash beats, rapped breaks, and heavily synthetic funk.
Not coincidentally in the least, both albums were produced by new jack swing mastermind Teddy Riley, who himself led the talented, successful late '80s new jack swing trio Guy.
Nonetheless, the cosmetic influence of new jack swing on much of the top-selling R&B that followed--from 112 and Usher to Jagged Edge--is undeniable.

In 1989 he sang on two RandB hits: “Where Do We Go from Here” and “One Love.” Gill finally scored as a solo singer in 1990 with the release of his album Johnny Gill, which sold a million copies, topped the RandB chart, and made the Top Ten in the pop chart.
The beats were funkier, the lyrics and vocals were sexier, and the overall sound had a harder, hip-hop-tinged edge.
