In 1890, 14,270 people lived in Newark, Ohio; in 1900, 18,157; in 1910, 25,404; in 1920, 27,718; and in 1940, 31,487.
Newark is the home of the corporate headquarters of basket-maker Longaberger.

According to James L. Murphy of Ohio State University, "Large white crinoid stems are common in the Upper Mercer and Boggs limestone units in Muskingum Co. and elsewhere, and these limestones are often very dark gray to fl in color.
Today, both the Decalogue Stone and Keystone, or "Newark Holy Stones," as they are known, are on display in the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum in Roscoe Village, 300 Whitewoman St., Coshocton, Ohio.
The Octagon and adjacent circle "B" are preserved by the Ohio Historical Society, and are now used as a golf course.

Heisey Glass was established in Newark, Ohio, in 1895 and the company, A. H Heisey and Co., opened their newly-built glass factory in 1896.
He married George Duncan's daughter, Susan, in 1870 and in 1879 he and James Duncan were the owners of the Duncan glassworks in Pittsburgh, which became part of US Glass Company.
Initially Heisey made pressed glass in designs imitating cut glass, using the latest machinery and complex patterns that were difficult to tell from genuine cut glass.

Newark police guarded the site to prevent interlopers from entering the grounds, and golf course personnel patrolled the area with flashlights, turning people away.
Thus, even though the weather gods smiled on the Octagon that night, the previously solid cloud cover unexpectedly breaking just in time, the people most interested in the earthworks were prevented from being there on the special night.
