NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Thousands of bags are loaded onto planes at Newark Liberty International Airport every day without being scanned for explosives, according to current and former screeners at the airport.
Several screeners told the newspaper that inadequate staffing and pressure to keep lines moving has affected security at the airport, where one of the four planes hijacked in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks had taken off.
The Newark airport installed 50 bomb-detection machines, but has been unable to pass all checked luggage through them due to manpower shortages.
