Newberry Volcano 7,985 ft (2,434 m) high is a large shield volcano located 40 miles (60 km) east of the Cascade Range and about 20 miles (30 km) southeast of Bend, Oregon.
The volcano is 20 miles (30 km) in diameter, has an approximate volume of 80 mile³ (330 km³), and it possesses a large oval-shaped caldera four by five miles in diameter, called the Newberry Caldera.
Newberry Caldera has existed possibly as long as 500,000 years, when the cone of the volcano is thought to have first collapsed.

At Newberry, basaltic eruptions have occurred repeatedly on the volcano's flanks and in the caldera.
As shown on the hazard-zonation map, the outline of zone LA broadly defines the elongate shape of Newberry volcano itself, consistent with the idea that the volcano has grown by the repeated eruption of lava from vents preferentially located on the north and south flanks and in the summit region.
From studies at Newberry and other Cascade volcanoes and volcanic fields, we estimate that 10-20 m (33-66 ft) is a representative range for the average thickness of a field of lava flows that would accumulate during an eruptive period.

The volcano is dominated by porphyritic andesite to rhyodacite lava and pyroclastic breccias, although several Quaternary basalt flows and breccias occur on the periphery.

Preliminary argon dating indicates that the farthest-traveled of the Newberry flows was the earliest at about 700 ka.
A similar remanent direction is found in the tube-fed basalt of Arnold Cave and the Badlands on the lower NNE flank of Newberry, but the preliminary age is not the same.
This basalt erupted from buried vents at least halfway up the north flank of the volcano and flowed through lava tubes west (through Lava River Cave) and north under downtown Bend to the southern edge of Redmond, diverting the former more easterly channel of the Deschutes River west to its present location.
