 Marquess of Lothian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mark Kerr was created Lord Newbottle in 1591 and Earl of Lothian in 1606, both with remainder to his heirs male.
Her husband, Sir William Kerr (eldest son of Sir Robert Kerr, later 1st Earl of Ancram) was created Lord Kerr of Newbottle and Earl of Lothian in 1631.
On her death in 1667 their eldest son became 4th Earl of Lothian (though he was not recognised as such) and on her husband's death in 1675 also 2nd Earl of Lothian.

He rendered at various seasons of the Church's year twenty shillings for cornage, two parts of a Milch Cow, four quarter of oats, ten bushels of scat oats, two quarters of scat malt.
One man was to plough and harrow four acres at Newbottle and twelve to do the Autumn Harvest.
Before commissioners on 25th April 1570 Robert Robinson together with Thomas Chilton and William Ranson in Newbottle expressed "lamentable penitence" for taking part in the Rising and were among the lucky ones granted a pardon.

1774, Aug 10 - Commenced to sink a pit at Newbottle from the surface to the Main Coal Seam.
Laidler, James, 26 Oct 1900, aged 49, Back-overman, A pannel, about seven inches thick, of stone had fallen on the engine plane and he and three others, after casting the stones to one side, were preparing to set a prop under some stone which sounded heavy, when it suddenly fell and killed him.

Here [Newbottle Township] are extensive collieries, which were carried on for many years by the Nesham family, from whom they were purchased in 1819 by the Earl of Durham.
The Margaret pit, working the Maudlin seam, at a depth of 115 fathoms, and 4 feet 6 inches in thickness, with an output of 700 tons per day of gas-coal, gives employment to 590 men and boys.

The second of the three shows is primarily an Auricula show and is usually held on the first Saturday in May at the Kingsway School, Cheadle in Cheshire.
The third of the three shows is again primarily an Auricula show and is usually held on the second Saturday in May at the Newbottle Workingman's Club at Newbottle, Houghton-le-Spring, Tyne and Wear.
Other spring shows that have classes for auriculas and primulas that some of our members attend are Wakefield Paxton, usually held on the second Saturday in April at the Outwood Memorial Hall, Outwood in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

A man named William Adams, who was breaking stones on the road leading from King's Sutton to Newbottle, and just on the outside of the spinney, says that he heard a whizzing noise coming through the spinney - a noise like a train coming up - accompanied with dense smoke.
A little further on a large hedge has been thrown down, and the fire ball has made great havoc at Newbottle Park, 116 yards or more of the wall of which was thrown down.
The wall is thrown down at intervals, and at one place seventy or eighty yards of it had been razed to the ground.

Looking for family of Jane Ward born 1839 in Newbottle.
Any information whatsoever on John and Elizabeth Wilson living in Newbottle around the 1840's would be appreciated, they had a daughter that I know of Jane Wilson (born around 1825) who married Alexander Sutherland, they married at Gateshead (1843c), had a son (John) at Houghton-le-sands in 1844.
And another son Charles Edward born 6/12/1847, he did not migrate with family so I assume he died as a child.

Great Start to the season by Waldridge Park U12s in their first competitive full game together against Newbottle Bees, from the first whistle to the last kick of the game the whole team battled for the whole game.
A first half hat-trick by Daniel Ball and goal each from Julian Tip and a stunning free kick from Jonathon Dobson gave Waldridge an excellent start.
This continued in the in the second half when Newbottle gave away penalty after a bad foul on Brett
