  Newbury String Players - geraldfinzi.org
Newbury String Players were formed in the dark war winter of 1940 by Gerald Finzi at a concert given in Enborne Church, when live music had been shut down.
He was convinced of the importance of this work and since his death in 1956 Christopher, his elder son, a freelance professional cellist at the time, took on the conducting of the Strings and their weekly rehearsals throughout the year.
Joy Finzi, the mainstay of the strings, added to the pattern of life which was to form a successful career in music for me (such was the insight of Gerald Finzi who first suggested it).

One group is an unspecified number of strings, another group is a flute quartet (clarinet and/or oboe may substitute for some of the flutes), and the trumpet part may be played by English horn, oboe, or clarinet.
When the principal theme finally arrives, it is introduced by the lower strings; in contrast, the winds present the second themea peppy march in dotted rhythm.

Naturally, in a window about the cultural life of Newbury, I had to include myself - I couldn't really have another painter in it, could I? Behind the easel is a version of the brass of Jack of Newbury in St Nicolas Church, and a reference to the Newbury Mosaic.
Here he is seen as conductor of Newbury String Players as he did intermittently until his death in 1956.
The window to be replaced was in the Town Hall, right in the centre of Newbury, and the proposal was to have the design ready to display on the eve of the final concert in the festival when all sponsors and trustees would be present.

 Gerald Finzi: Biography
His first published work was 'By Footpath and Stile' (1921-22), a song-cycle for baritones and string quartet to texts by Thomas Hardy, whose work Finzi greatly admired.
But rural and musical isolation soon became oppressive and in 1926 he moved back to London and began to study with RO Morris, one of the outstanding British teachers of the inter-war years.
He founded the Newbury String Players, initially using local amateurs, reviving much neglected 18th Century string music as well as giving several premieres by his contemporaries.
