The station became increasingly ramshackle and cluttered as the 19th century went on, until the decision was finally taken to tear the whole thing down and begin again.
Construction began on the new station in 1900 and continued until 1922, with the new station boasting 21 platforms and a concourse nearly 800 feet (244 m) long.

COURT - Online Information article about COURT
If he was slain, a fixed sum (wergild), varying according to his station, had to be paid to his relatives, while a further but smaller sum (manbot) was due to his lord.
The only other central authority in the state was the king's council or court (bend, wilan, plebs, concilium).
These principles applied to all classes of society alike, and though strife within the family was by no means unknown, at all events in royal families, the actual slaying of a kinsman was regarded as the most heinous of all offences.

Built originally as a twin terminus, the Central was in effect two stations for three Railways, The 'Newcastle and Carlisle' facing West, the 'Newcastle and North Shields' facing East and the 'Great North of England Railway' arriving from the South over the High Level Bridge into the East end of the station.
Trains heading for Scotland had to reverse out of the Station, head East along the Newcastle and North Shields and then head North.
From its opening in 1850 the station underwent many developments that were added to the original layout the most radical being through the period 1893 -1906.

 Dictionary of Australian Biography We-Wy
He bought a share in a station property with which he had some success, did some exploring, and in 1848 was offered a seat on a proposed nominee council by the governor, Sir George Grey (q.v.).
He afterwards was partner in a station at Clunes where the Port Phillip gold mine was discovered, from which he drew large royalties.
Like the other squatters he was, for once, more interested in obtaining cheap labour for his stations than in the general good of the colony.

 Newcastle - CENTRAL STATION
The South Barrel Roof of Newcastle Station was in need of major refurbishment necessitating initially a protection deck and access to allow a detailed survey to establish the full extent of required work to this Grade 1 listed building.
The sophisticated design provided both protection for the public and access for all the specialist contractors to both remove the old roof and install a new roof while the station continued to operate normally.
The heavy duty decks were designed to stand for several years while the work was meticulously planned and was installed during 35 four hour possessions for the West End and an improved 25 possessions for the East End.
