The "Falcons" title was taken on board during the 1990s when local businessman Sir John Hall took control and attempted to emulate the success of the Barcelona sporting club in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Newcastle was the first of the “professional” rugby union clubs in England.
In August 2006 Rob Andrew left the Falcons to be in overall charge of the England set-up ahead of the 2007 World Cup in a wide-ranging role that encompasses all aspects of the professional representative game in England.
