Newcastleton is a very convenient base from which to visit the surrounding countryside.
A short distance southwards a mediaeval cross, associated with the Armstrongs, stands near the foot of a small road leading up to one of the two valley burial grounds, where tombstones of four or five centuries ago are preserved among more recent but not less historically interesting monuments.

The village is in Liddesdale and is on the Liddel Water, and is the site of Hermitage Castle.

Unperturbed I made ready and headed out to explore what Newcastleton had to offer, my spirits were lifted when I saw that I wasn't the only one making the effort when a transit van pulled into the carpark and started unloading bikers.
The trail starts at the top of a small climb (nothing like the climb up to the red squirrel car park at Glentress), the signs were clear and from the map in the leaflet I had already decided that I would ride the red route first, this being the longest at 13km.

 Forestry Commission - News - double biking boost for newcastleton
Mountain biking in Newcastleton received a double boost with a new award of 'Excellence' from the Hawick Partnership and the setting up of a local volunteer group to support trailbuilding.
The award was in recognition of the effort and achievements for the Holm to Holm mountain bike race held in the village last year, and the newly named 'Woodland Warriors' have been formed to add more spice to the popular 7stanes trails in Newcastleton.
This year's Newcastleton Forest MTB race is to be held on 22nd / 23rd October.

It's 7 or 8 miles to Langholm along the main road; a mile and a bit of this is on a dedicated cycle track.

Immediately, the 500m fl-graded Black Ridge presents itself as an option, cutting straight down to give a steep, technical descent, with sections of North Shore, drop-offs and balance beams.

This is a rollercoaster trail that runs parallel to the forest road, climbing up and then swooping down to end where you started: at the entrance to the Hidden Valley.
