Dog Owner's Guide Profile: The Newfoundland
The Newfoundland, a gentle giant among canines, is a striking dog bound to elicit admiring comments wherever he accompanies his owner.
A Newfoundland requires thorough combing once a week (more during shedding season), and requires a fair amount of brisk exercise with you; otherwise he will probably be just as happy to lie around becoming unhealthy, fat, and lazy.
Newfie rescue groups are inundated with dogs, some with poor temperament and ill-health because unscrupulous breeders failed to screen for genetic diseases, assess the temperament of their breeding dogs, and socialize their puppies and some because owners weren't prepared for a very big dog that shed, drooled, and took up too much space.

wcbstv.com - Bow-Wow Boogie: Dog Dancing Is Latest Craze
In the world of dog dance, there is a school of thought that people who boogie with their bow-wows shouldn't attract attention to themselves with flashy outfits.
Dogs [and cats] perform this movement naturally, and Rabschutz has captured it for her dance routine by rewarding Ben when he stretches, so that he now associates the movement with a cue and a reward.

Newfoundlands are usually very calm and relaxed dogs, and tend to be very friendly.

The breed may be a descendant of nomadic Indian dogs, or of Viking "bear dogs." Others believe the Newfoundland is a close relative of the Labrador.
Today safer ships and improved communications have limited the dog's processional activities but its appeal has not diminished due to the fact that it is considered a handsome, devoted, delightful companion.
