History of Newgate - New York's first prison
Newgate opened in 1797 and closed 31 years later when the new Sing Sing prison was ready to take prisoners sentenced out of New York City.
Newgate represented a rejection of the approach to crime and punishment that had prevailed in the colonies.
Newgate's administrators complained, first, that it was difficult to find contractors and, second, that it made the prison dependent upon them (the failure of a shoemaking contractor in 1819 idled many inmates for months, with no income to the prison).

A new prison at Newgate was begun in 1770 and proceeded slowly.
Newgate had the great advantage, from the authorities' point of view at least, of being next door to the Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey) which was the trial venue for all of London's most serious criminals.
Newgate closed for good in late May 1902 so that the new Central Criminal Court which opened in 1907 (always known as the Old Bailey) could be built on the site.

At the corner of Newgate Street and of the Old Bailey is the gloomy granite building which was once the chief prison in London, but is now, as has been mentioned before in these pages, used only for prisoners awaiting trial at the Central Criminal Court, and for those there condemned to death.

Though it was technically a local prison under the control of the Lord Mayor and Aldermen of London, it held a special position because it was not only the place of detention for all those awaiting trial at the neighboring court, but also a sort of holding pen for those awaiting execution.
Newgate was notorious for its overcrowding, unhealthy environment (lack of air and water, and epidemics).
It is because of these writings that Newgate Prison has become the most well-documented prison of eighteenth-century England, allowing modern scholars to understand the system of justice during the time.

The Newgate Calendar - Introduction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The Newgate Calendar was one of those books, along with a Bible, Foxe's book of Martyrs and the Pilgrim's Progress, most likely to be found in any English home between 1750 and 1850.
Children were encouraged to read it because it was believed to inculcate principles of right living -- by fear of punishment if not by the dull and earnest morals appended to the stories of highwaymen and other felons.
Although editions of the Newgate Calendar are still published from time to time they tend to be very incomplete versions -- less than 10% of the original (see Bibliographic Details) -- so this ex-classics version will, we hope, be useful to students and scholars as well as the general reading public.
