Newhaven used to be named Meeching until the 16th Century when a great storm diverted the course of the Sussex Ouse so forming a New Haven.
To the east of Newhaven is the derelict village of Tide Mills which is the remains of workers' cottages, a tide mill, and a large saline lagoon which was the storage pond for high water to power the mill on the outgoing tide.

Newhaven FC is one of the oldest clubs in Sussex, and was formed by the Towner family who were brewers in the town during the latter 19th century after a meeting in the Bridge Hotel in December 1889.
In 1950/51 Newhaven finished in fourth place behind champions Haywards Heath, and in 1953/54 won the League, ahead of Rye United and Cuckfield.
Newhaven once again returned to the top division in 1971/72, and won the Division One championship in 1973/74, finishing two points ahead of Littlehampton Town.

Situated at the mouth of the River Ouse in East Sussex, the entrance to Newhaven's harbour lies between two piers, protected from the prevailing wind by a substantial breakwater to the west.
In April 2001 the east quay, adjacent land and buildings, harbour authority rights and outer harbour were sold to French company Transmanche for approximately £15 million.
Newhaven harbour can accommodate vessels of up to 160 metres in length, with a maximum draft of 8 metres.
