Newhaven is a town in the county of East Sussex in England.
The town is home to a small marina and a fairly large industrial harbour at the mouth of the River Ouse, Sussex and is defended by Newhaven Fort, built into the cliffs.
Newhaven used to be named Meeching until the 16th Century when a great storm diverted the course of the Sussex Ouse so forming a NewHaven.

His lasting legacy at the fort was the unique design of the entrance drawbridge, which allowed the archway to be completely covered by the roadway section when the bridge was raised.
Although fully manned, Newhaven Fort was at low risk of invasion, and day-to-day life remained uneventful.
In 1967 plans were put in place to convert the fort into a holiday village but this venture eventually failed and Newhaven Fort was left to the mercy of the elements and local vandals.

Seaford Bay and the port of Newhaven were always tempting landing places for an invader and the defensive history of the area dates back to the Bronze age when a large enclose fort was built on the cliff.
One report suggests we actually had a lucky escape however, as it's reported that the guns at Newhaven were “unmounted and of little worth” and it was just as well the fleet kept their distance.
The current Newhaven Fort structure was built around the 1860's and is the largest work of defence ever constructed in Sussex.

James Baldwin of an established family from Newhaven, undertook to investigate the possibility of an additional Lodge and brought together twenty members of Lodges in the surrounding districts who were ready to become founder members of the new Lodge.
