There were roadside inns (Footnote 69) and by 1570 at least three houses on the Stoke Newington side of High Street, of which two were occupied by a tailor and a shoemaker respectively.
On the South Hornsey part of the London road, Gordon Road was constructed between 1855 and 1861 and Walford Road between 1861 and 1870.
Terraces on the London road were constructed during the same period, (Footnote 6) as was the police station (1868) at no. 33 High Street and the Devonshire Square Baptist chapel (1870) at the junction with Walford Road.

As previously mentioned, Daniel Defoe is arguably Stoke Newington's most famous son, being the author of Robinson Crusoe, A Journal of the Plague Year and the fruity tale of Moll Flanders.
His tombstone is on display in Stoke Newington Library which is a very small, friendly little place, and as well as the tombstone of Daniel Defoe, one can usually find on display there the leather top hat that once belonged to Marc Bolan, lead singer with 70's glam-rockers T-Rex.

Ibrahim Muktar Said, 27, of Stoke Newington, north London, Ramzi Mohamed, 23, of North Kensington, west London, and Yassin Omar, 24, of New Southgate, north London, appeared at Bow Street Magistrates Court sitting at Belmarsh, south-east London.
The three were accused of conspiracy to murder; attempted murder; conspiring to endanger life by using explosives; and of making or possessing an explosive with the intent to endanger life or cause serious injury on July 21.
