  Inventor of the Week: Archive
In the summer of 1964, a new sport was borne of a vision that Newman Darby had while vacationing on Wyoming Mountain in Pennsylvania.
Darby invented the first windsurfer, which he called a "sailboard," after watching his girlfriend, Naomi, sail on a boat he had built from ashore.
Also in 1964, Darby and his girlfriend were married, and they quickly began talking with relatives about the idea they had to manufacture sailboards.

Lemelson Center Invention Features: Newman Darby
Darby recalled childhood boat rides on the Susquehanna River, summer vacations on the Chesapeake Bay, excursions to boat builders' shops with his father, and his early attempts to build a boat while in middle school.
Darby also developed an important refinement to the first sailboard: the universal joint that connects the sail to the board, which allowed for greater control of speed and steering.
Darby's universal joint was a critical improvement to the sailboard and remains a distinguishing feature on windsurfing boards.

Darby was a traveler and only occasionally present, and Wigram and Hall had moved on to London and Hereford to establish new churches.
Because of his revulsion with the church he had left, Darby was never at ease with the appointment of elders, and as time went by he increasingly devalued the importance of the formal recognition of an eldership.

Darby visited the set while the picture was still shooting in order to rehearse the choral scenes and the first part of the book details his reminiscences whilst on the set, involving his discussions with Stevens and other production staff about the music.
Newman decided to have nothing to do with these substitutions and left the recording of them to Darby.
Fortunately Darby was able to preserve a two-track tape of the entire score as originally recorded, which he then presented to Newman.

Although the Darby's name has been mentioned through the years when the origins of windsurfing was discussed, their idea was always referred to as something that didn't work.
But in fact, Newman had been working with the idea of a 'free sail' since 1948 and the Darby's were producing and selling their boards in 1964.
The Darby's phased out their production of sailboards by the late 60s as sales were not going well and it wasn't until Schweitzer's Windsurfer™;, which began being mass produced in the early 70s that the fledging sport took off.

Classical Net Review - Newman - The Greatest Story Ever Told
To be fair, Newman took all kinds of assignments (and sometimes got lucky enough to work on classic films), even while he ran Fox music, and I suspect he thought of himself as the supreme professional who could come up with something at least tolerable, even on relatively short notice.
The claim made by the liner notes that Newman's score stands "amongst the most important in the history of cinema" either comes from somebody who knows very little about the history of film music or can be put down to copywriters who let their sales enthusiasm get away from them.
Newman's music, I hasten to add, far surpasses the movie for which he composed it and doesn't have to be a masterpiece to be worthy of anyone's time.

For Darby, Rome was the cause of it: The Church of England shared in Rome's apostasy by retaining too much from the Catholic past — particularly its privileged status in affairs of state.
He fails to comprehend that both John Darby and John Henry Newman were dismayed by the Church of England's politico-religious compromises, and that Darby's descent into radically sectarian, anti-Catholic reaction may have been less logical and less inspired than Newman's ascent to Rome.

I suspect that Newman's very hectic schedule did not allow him to fully integrate his ideas with the contributions of the many musical hands that worked on Hunchback, which at the time was the most mammoth project ever undertaken by RKO (the Paris set alone covered sixty acres).
This is not to begrudge the artistry of Newman, or certainly the enterprise of the producers of this project.

Newman later provided a vital service to the composer and history by recording, at his own expense, the Kolisch Quartet performing Schoenberg's four String Quartets on the Goldwyn company's sound equipment, at a time when almost no chamber music of any kind was being preserved by the record companies.
Newman, Bernard Herrmsnn, Miklos Rozas, Dimitri Tiomkin, Max Steiner, and the others of their generation were either retired or relegated to the role of elder statesman in their field, while younger musicians such as Jerry Goldsmith, Richard Rodney Benneft, John Barry, Maurice Jarre, and Johnny (later John) Williams were increasingly sought out.
