Newmarket as a center for racing meetings (yes, they still call the races "meetings" in England) dates to when James I (1566-1625) built a hunting lodge there.
Charles II (1630-1685) presided over horseraces at Newmarket Heath and established the custom of awarding cups or bowls, which were worth 100 guineas, to the winners.
Newmarket was and still is a "flat" race course, as opposed to a national hunt--or steeplechase--course.

He was the winner of the very first Epsom Derby in 1780, and in later life he was exported to America to become the premier sire there, leaving a dynasty that was to last for generations down through the great era of Lexington in the last half of the 1800s.
Diomed was bred by the Honorable Richard Vernon of Newmarket and sold to Sir Charles Bunbury, president of the Jockey Club in England, for whom he raced.
Boston, in turn, sired the champion racehorse Lexington, who became the leading sire in America for 18 years, and whose sons and daughters dominated racing and breeding up to the turn of the century.

The first running went to the filly Charlotte, but unlike the 2000 Guineas, the race was run on the 7 furlong - 178 yards Ditch Mile course at Newmarket; it was transferred to the Rowley Mile at Newmarket in 1873.
In 1866 Blenkiron donated £1000 to the Jockey Club for a two-year-old race over 6 furlongs at Newmarket, and so the Middle Park Stakes was born on 10th October 1866, with the initial running won by The Rake.
