The principal lakes are Lough Mask and Lough Corrib, on the borders of the county with Galway, and Loughs Conn in the east, Carrowmore in the north-west, Beltra in the west, and Carra adjoining Lough Mask.
The county is in the Protestant diocese of Tuam and the Roman Catholic dioceses of Taum, Achonry, Galway and Kilmacduagh, and Killala.
Large confiscations of the estates in the county were made in 1586, and on the termination of the wars of 1641; and in 1666 the restoration of his estates to the 4th Viscount Mayo involved another confiscation, at the expense of Cromwell's settlers.

MAYO (County of), a maritime county of the province of CONNAUGHT, bounded on the east by the counties of Sligo and Roscommon, on the north and west by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the south by the county of Galway.
According to the return of a jury on this occasion, the county comprised 1448 quarters, whereof 248 were exempted; the rest paid £600 per annum and contributed 200 foot and 40 horse for general hostings within the province, at their own expense, when required, and 50 foot and 15 horse for general service throughout Ireland.
This bay, which separates the counties of Mayo and Galway, penetrates eleven miles into the interior between steep and lofty mountains, and is uniformly about half a mile in breadth, being throughout an excellent harbour for large ships, though occasionally subject to squalls from the hills.

A landmark endeavor, the Newport Academy was one of the earliest schools chartered west of Pittsburgh.
Newport Academy, also known as the Newport Seminary, operated until 1850 when the Kentucky Legislature officially transferred all of the Academy property and assets to the Newport Public Schools.
Prior to 1842 funding for the public education by the Newport City Council was purely discretional and apparently inadequate, resulting in an April 1842 committee of interested citizens appearing before the City Council.

Twenty-seven pounds were voted to be expended to the Killery portion of the district, tin the employment of nine water-keepers, to be appointed by the conservators; and £30 to be expended for the same purpose in the Newport side of the district.
Patrick Caulfield was appointed clerk for the district and inspector of the Killery division, at a salary of £15.

A letter from Lord Sligo to Sir Neal O’Donel the younger, informing him of the forcible landing of tobacco near Newport and that the authorities in Dublin have been notified, might infer that the involvement of the O’Donel family in smuggling could be common knowledge in the area.
