The city's importance as a trading port in the Middle Ages was emphasised when a 15th century ship, referred to locally as the Newport ship, was uncovered from the bank of the Usk in 2002, during the construction of the Riverfront Arts Centre.
The city is one of the warmer and sunnier locations in the UK and its sheltered location tends to protect Newport from extreme weather.
The City of Newport is divided between the parliamentary constituencies of Newport West and Newport East.

 Newport News-Times: Newport City Council discusses impacts of Measure 37
A couple of months ago, City Attorney Chris Minor first discussed his concerns with that measure, telling the city council that it was "an iceberg on the horizon." This week he said, "We hit the iceberg." Minor added that he doesn't think Oregon voters had a full understanding of the measure when they approved it.
Cities across the state are now scrambling to understand how the measure will affect their ability to maintain land use regulations.
Because the way in which the city responds to Measure 37 claims could involve the city in a lawsuit, the city council decided to discuss further details in executive session - as it is permitted to do under Oregon public meetings law pertaining to potential litigation.

The Newport ship is a 15th century sailing vessel discovered by archaeologists in June 2002 at Newport, South Wales.
It was found on the west bank of the River Usk, which runs through the city centre, whilst building a new arts centre.
This sum was found by the Welsh Assembly Government and Newport City Council.

The City Council granted licenses to Gregory Angel, owner of Pangea Pedicab Inc., and Ben Morris, owner of Boston Pedicab Inc., to each operate up to six of the bicycle-drawn rickshaws this summer.
Morris' application for a license to operate pedicabs in the city was on the council agenda for Dec. 14.
Council members asked the operators to accept the ordinance in its current form, which they did.

 The future of Newport's Mediaeval Ship
Following detailed negotiations between Sir Harry Jones, Leader of Newport City Council and Edwina Hart, Finance Minister at the National Assembly for Wales, a plan to save and display the Newport mediaeval ship for future posterity was announced on 23 August.
Council plans do not allow for incorporation of the bow and the stern which have yet to be recovered.
Newport City Council have at this point yet to convene an expert panel of advisors to consider a long term plan for the post excavation work on the Newport Ship, including cleaning and recording the timbers and small finds, specialist reports including dating and provenancing the ship, computerised reconstruction, publication, and conservation prior to re-assembly.

NEWPORT CITY -- The Newport City Council agreed in principle with the Derby Town Select Board Monday evening to provide sewer connection to Wal-Mart and other new development on Route 5 in Derby.
The city has agreed to sell 50,000 gallons a day of sewer capacity to Derby for $650,000, which would in turn be bought by Route 5 developers.
The city is prepared to provide the extra capacity, once the sewage treatment plant is expanded in December and the last sewer system overflows are caught and corrected, City Manager John Ward said.

NEWPORT - Newport City Council members put a few controversial issues to bed at their Jan. 11 meeting.
The council also voted unanimously to allow the Redevelopment Agency to go ahead with plans for the Central Newport Urban Design Study without a restriction, set in an earlier council meeting, that the plan not include the option of reopening Long Wharf Mall to traffic.
After the council placed the restriction on the study, the Redevelopment Agency drafted a letter to the council stating that unless the study could go forward without restriction, the agency would pull the plug on the whole project.

We are particularly glad that Newport City Council publicly announced in the Press that the Bow and Stern are to be recovered.
I understand that Newport is currently discussing the archaeological arrangements for recovering whatever survives of the bow and stern of the vessel.
Once these remains have been recovered, the City Council, will be putting in place arrangements for further recording of the ship's timbers and their conservation, eventually leading to the reconstruction and display.

NEWPORT - City officials are getting organized with plans to put the Naval Hospital, a 10-acre tract of land sitting vacant on Newport's waterfront, back on the tax roles.
