NEWPORT - Zingo Stevens was a slave of John Stevens in the venerable John Stevens Shop, a stone cutting shop on Upper Thames Street since the early 18th century (and still around today.) Zingo Stevens, who reverted to his African name from Pompey after he was freed, learned to carve headstones at the shop.
To its credit, Newport and its white residents played a prominent role in the abolitionist and anti-slavery movements and were among the pioneers in advocating for fl freedom and equality.
Education in Newport was desegregated in 1866, largely through the efforts of the influential George T. Downing and Col. Thomas Wentworth Higginson, who had commanded an all-fl regiment in the Civil War and was a well-known abolitionist and intellectual.
