In 1891, Newport News Shipbuilding delivered its first ship, a tugboat named Dorothy.
In the 1980s (The decade from 1980 to 1989), NNS produced a variety of Navy products, including Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carriers (additional info and facts about Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carriers) and Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarines (additional info and facts about Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarines).
On November 7, 2001, NNS signed a merger agreement with Northrop Grumman (additional info and facts about Northrop Grumman), the combination creating a $4 billion shipyard now called Northrop Grumman Newport News.

Both in 1900 and in 1905 Newport News ranked second to Richmond among the cities of the state in the value of factory products.
The first settlement on the site of Newport News was made in 1621 by planters brought from Ireland by Daniel Gookin, the father of Daniel Gookin (1612-1687) of Massachusetts, who selected the site on the advice of Sir William Newce and his brother Captain Newce.
The present city dates only from 1882, when it was laid out in consequence of the extension of the Chesapeake and Ohio railway to the coast here; it was incorporated in 1896.
