Tour Newport-on-Tay on a small group Tour of Scotland.
Newport - on - Tay in North Fife was previously named New Dundee and was regarded as a fashionable place to reside by the wealthy Jute Barons of Dundee in the 19th century.
Consequently this led to the village of Wormit being established as a commuter town and rail link between Newport - on - Tay and Dundee.
It was to be a tragic journey, and as the bridge collapsed, the train plummeted into the River Tay killing all seventy five people on board.

 Burgh of Newport on Tay
Newport on Tay, which owes its existence to the ancient ferries, which plied from there to Dundee, became a Police Burgh in 1887.
The ship and the sea recall that Newport was at the southern end of the ferry of Seamylnes, a ferry that ran for centuries until the opening of the Tay Road Bridge in 1966.
The ship bears on its sail the arms of Nairne of Sandford (now St Fort) while the lion with the cross in the stern comes from the arms of Berry of Tayfield; these two families have very close associations with the town.

Newport-on-Tay Feature Page on Undiscovered Scotland
The coming of the Tay Rail Bridge in 1878 (and its replacement in 1887) confirmed Newport-on-Tay as a highly desirable suburb of Dundee and the style of the shops and public buildings such as the old ferry terminus reflect the grandeur of the times.
The story of Newport-on-Tay is almost entirely the story of Dundee, for without the presence of Scotland's fourth city on the far bank of the Tay, there's no particular reason for anything to have developed where Newport now stands.
The Tay Road Bridge, opened in 1966, saw the end of Newport as the ferry port gateway to the Kingdom of Fife, and afterwards both it and Wormit rapidly became part of Dundee's suburbia.
