  Analysing the News
News is often identified with the person reporting it - whether that is the journalist writing the story or the one fronting the TV report.
News is often supplied to newspapers, radios and TV stations by a news agency.
There is also a hierarchy of news - a series of news values that editors and other gatekeepers use in order to decide which news stories to communicate - and in what order.

UNCP - Journalism - The seven news values held by news media gatekeepers
We often speak of seven news values held by news media gatekeepers – impact, timeliness, prominence, proximity, bizarreness, conflict, and currency.
Of particular value are stories brought to the public ahead of the competition.
For example, journalists assess the value of a news item reporting tragic deaths by comparing the number of deaths with the distance from the home community.

Financial news employees must also avoid investment activities that are speculative or driven by day-trading or short-term profit goals because such activities may create the impression that the employee is seeking to drive market factors or is acting upon information that is not available to the public.
Employees must inform a news manager before accepting honoraria and/or reimbursement of expenses for giving speeches or participating in seminars at colleges and universities or at other educational events if such appearance makes use of AP's name or the employee represents himself or herself as an AP employee.

News values - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
News values determine how much prominence a news story is given by a media outlet.
In practice such decisions are made informally by editors on the basis of their experience and intuition, however analysis shows that several factors are consistently applied across a range of news organizations.
Continuity: A story that is already in the news gathers a kind of inertia.

 mass media: news values
Political parties' news management techniques will try to take advantage of this news value by, for example in the run-up to an election, holding press conferences or arranging photo-opportunities at times which do 'fit in'.
Clearly the news is peopled by real individuals, but in representing events through people the news is following the conventions of classic realism, for it assumes that the way to construct an understandable and authentic version of the real is through the actions, words and reactions of the individuals involved.
The implication in many studies of news values seems to be that they are virtually objective factors, to which journalists and editors react reflexively.

 Sports vs News Values
However, with the increasing commercialisation of sport, these values are seen as being eroded, and the media is seen as playing a large part in that erosion.
Whilst sports values tend to be positive, a primary news value is negativity, hence stories about sports players taking drugs, or being injured may be more prominently reported than stories about sporting success.

The concept of values -- formed from the Latin that means to be of worth -- seems far removed from the heat of fighting daily fires.
However, the real-world importance of values can be grasped by a study of how companies groom their next generation of leaders.
For that reason, multinational companies have started to focus on discovering core values, anchored in clear descriptions of behaviors that can be shared across cultures and to apply those values as measuring sticks to their future leaders.

Placing values at the centre of educational practice and content is an exciting and fulfilling process that involves both head and heart.
Perhaps the main challenge that values education lays at the door of every values educator is the inescapable requirement for a real personal commitment to values in one’s own life, for being a role model is an essential component of giving a consistent message about the relevance and importance of values.
This does not mean that teachers must be accredited as angels before embarking on values work; a supportive ethos in the school as a whole, appropriate principles and resources all have their part to play too.

LINCOLN, Neb. — Agricultural land values in Nebraska are likely to remain relatively stable for the next couple of years after two decades of fairly steady gains, but some downturn is not out of the question given a number of key uncertainties, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln agricultural economist says.
Topping the list of issues that could change land values are ongoing international trade negotiations among members of the World Trade Organization and the next federal farm bill that will take effect in 2007.
In many cases, he said, those arrangements are "out of sync" with farming trends that have a significant impact on bottom lines, including higher land values, new crop-production technology, the move toward no tillage and increased cost of irrigation systems.
