News style - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
News style encompasses not only vocabulary and sentence structure, but also the way in which stories present the information in terms of relative importance, tone, and intended audience.
There are debated degrees of professionalism among particular news agencies, and their reputability or public value, according to professional standards of idealism and depending on what the reader wants from a news story, may be tied to their ability to be objective.
This makes writing a lede an optimization problem, in which the goal is to articulate the most encompassing and interesting statement that a writer can make in one sentence, given the material with which he or she has to work.

Poynter Online - Writing News Online
Because your readers are getting their news online, chances are they are more interested in Internet-related stories than TV viewers or newspaper readers, so it may make sense to put greater emphasis on such stories.
Writing for the Web should be a cross between broadcast and print -- tighter and punchier than print, but more literate and detailed than broadcast writing.
With so many alternative news sources now at everyone's fingertips thanks to the Web, it is now more important than ever that we stick to the fundamentals of journalism to produce news people can trust, because in the end that's what will keep people coming back for more.

NBC News, like most legitimate news organizations, has a long history of annoying leaders from both parties who never seem to get the fact that what’s news and how it’s defined, isn’t up to them.
Some of the critics, however, come from within the journalism community and are anything but “right wing.” I suspect their main complaint arises from that third part of the news agenda.
But the drive to be “first” is part of every news operation, and it very likely played a role here (yes, technically they weren’t “first.” The Los Angeles Times and others have used “Civil War” from time to time, but NBC got there first in the only race it cares about...

Every news story begins with a lead (pronounced LEED), so learning to write a good lead is the first step in learning to write a good story.
Rule #1: A straight news lead should be a single paragraph consisting of a single sentence, should contain no more than 30 words, and should summarize, at minimum, the most newsworthy "what," "where" and "when" of the story.
You might be tempted to write the lead like this: "Fire destroyed a house on Main Street early this morning." And doing so would be just fine if your lead were going to be published that same day.
