Newsround (called John Craven's Newsround before the departure of John Craven) is a BBC children's news programme, which has run continuously since 4 April 1972.
Newsround's Producers are Simon Goretzki and Sinead Rocks with Ian Prince, as Editor.
Newsround was the first BBC programme to break the news of the loss of the Space Shuttle Challenger.

This fifty minute broadcast highlighted the major events of Newsround’s life set to the music of the time, and this highly effective technique was accompanied by captions at the bottom of the screen, no narration at all and clips of the various Newsround title sequences over the years.
In January 2001 Newsround was moved from 5pm to 5:25pm, as part of continuing reforms of CBBC by new head of children’s programming, Nigel Pickard.
Newsround remained at 5:25pm on BBC-1 and a new five minute programme called Newsround Lite was shown every night at 6:25pm on the CBBC channel.

Newsround is just excellent directed at kids it’s the only news bulletin the kids want to watch.
I remember watching it when it was John Craven's Newsround, but over the years, it has been modernised and made more interactive, but that makes it even better for children to take notice and follow whats happening in the world today.

BBC 1 saw John Craven present his Newsround at five past five on weekdays (it aired twice weekly in the beginning and went to every weekday in 1979).
Newsround provided background to headlines which adult news program took for granted their audience knew about, and conflicts from Rhodesia to Northern Ireland were explained to the kids.
In the days when there was no BBC TV news between lunchtime and 5.45pm, Newsround would often break important news stories - When the space shuttle Challenger exploded on take-off in 1986, it was decided to break the story in Newsround instead of in a newsflash.

To help try and despell the myth that news has to be boring, and to fill that annoying little gap in the schedules, the BBC commishioned a series of 10 minute news programmes for children to run twice a week for six weeks.
The title was permanantly shortened to Newsround and continued under Roger Finn and Helen Rollason until 1990 when Juliet Morris took over from Helen, shortly followed by Krishnan Guru-Murthy who took over from Roger.
From around 1977 Newsround Weekly was shown on a Friday and acted as a round-up of the week's main stories.

Newsround must be praised for bringing the news to young people and helping to make them aware of the world that is around them but the programmes does have its flaws.
Newsround spends too much time raising and talking about small isues and doesn't focus on the big stories.
I always felt that this was the case when I watched the show as a kid and I believe that Newsround must change to keep on bringing the news effectively to young people.

Although it is only an 10 min spot, it manages to give you all the information without leaving out the important parts to an issue - even dealing with the greatest threats and disasters of the world.
The presenters have always been an good bunch, though many will say that it has never been the same since John Craven left (and I will agree since I appeared on Newsround with him presenting), they have all taken over the role marvously.
The format has constantly changed to keep up with the times - including the edition of an Press Pack (where occasionally kids present the news), but has never lost the sparkle of the early years.

John Craven will return to Newsround for a one-off bulletin marking the show's 30th anniversary, the BBC announced today.
