Scamander wrote the first edition in 1918, when he was just 21 years old, at the request of August Worme, head of Obscurus Books, the original publisher.
Scamander begins with a definition of a "beast," which includes some intelligent creatures, such as centaurs and merpeople.
Scamander reports that it actually is a kelpie, a type of water demon that can change form, most often appearing as a horse with cattails for a mane.

In a 2001 interview with publisher Scholastic, Rowling stated that she chose the subject of magical creatures because it was a fun topic for which she already had developed a lot of information.
After graduating from Hogwarts, Scamander joined the Ministry of Magic in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.
Though Rowling has never hidden the fact that she is the author of Fantastic Beasts..., "Newt Scamander" can nevertheless be considered a pseudonym of hers, as "he" is technically the author listed on the book's cover.

As Albus Dumbledore says in his introduction, this set textbook by Newt Scamander has given the perfect grounding to many a Hogwarts student.
The creatures listed are either newly invented by JK Rowling or else they are alienated versions of traditional folklore; sometimes her interpretations of the more well established mythological beings can get quite irritating, especially with the whole "you stupid muggles don't know anything" attitude.
All right, so the character of Newt Scamander is a wizard, but at times it seems as though Rowling really does want the reader to feel as though they could punch the wizarding world in the face.

BOOK REVIEW: Textbooks for Wizards -- Rowling Offers Two Brief Windows to the Wizard World   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Quidditch Through The Ages, by Kennilworthy Whisp was one of the first books Harry Potter checked out from the library in his first adventure.
Similarly, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, by Newt Scamander (full name Newton Artemis Fido Scamander) is one of Harry Potter’s textbooks.
Both textbooks carry Rowling’s ready wit and more than their share of in-jokes -- recommendations for Quidditch Through the Ages are written by Guilderoy Lockhart (former Hogwarts teacher), Ludovich Bagman (athlete/compulsive gambler), and Rita Skeeter (magical paparazzi) among others.

Even though Rowling wrote the two 64-page volumes (and provides some artwork in each, too), you'll see other author names on them --- Rowling has used two creative pen names.
So when you head for the bookstore, library, or online bookseller, here's what you'll look for: FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM by Newt Scamander and QUIDDITCH THROUGH THE AGES by Kennilworthy Whisp.
In FANTASTIC BEASTS, you'll find an alphabetical listing of the creatures you've read about in the four Harry Potter books, like Blast-ended Skrewts, dragons and basilisks (giant serpents).

To add authenticity to the product, it's apparently printed to look like "a facsimile of the copy" from the Hogwarts' library.
And if that's not enough for Harry Potter fans, there's "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." The book, also penned by Rowling under the name Newt Scamander, is an A to Z listing of "magical beasts" that populate Harry Potter's world.
Both books, sold together, are 64 pages each.

 TIME.com: Magic 101 -- Mar. 19, 2001 -- Page 1
Late last year, J.K. Rowling distressed zillions of readers by announcing that the fifth novel in her Harry Potter saga would not appear in 2001.
The author sweetened this dismal news, at least a little, by promising to make available two books regularly read by students at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: Quidditch Through the Ages (Scholastic; 56 pages; $3.99) by Kennilworthy Whisp, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Scholastic; 42 pages; $3.99) by Newt Scamander.
Neither of these cleverly factitious offerings, both of course written by Rowling, will make much sense to those not already steeped in Potter lore.
