As soon as the news of the burning of the court-house was well understood in the county, the people began to agitate again as to the removal, and at the next meeting of the Legislature, which took place during the year 1877, a petition was presented by the representative of the county, Hon.
The Indian population, according to the census of 1890, is 349 in this county.

From the best information obtainable, there were from 20,000 to 25,000, and it is supposed that Newton county had rather over an average number of Indians in comparison to the other parts of this acquired territory.
This county was a fine range, well watered, and an excellent hunting ground, and the supposition is that large numbers came here for an easy living, and to amuse and interest themselves.
In this county they have mostly abandoned their ball plays, which were very demoralizing and wicked places when dominated by drunken white men and negroes.

Newton County was named for Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727), the English mathematician, who was knighted by Queen Anne in 1705 and who is celebrated for his discoveries in the field of optics and for his formulations of the laws of motion and gravity.
By the year 1837 there were in the county 1,506 whites and 426 slaves, and by 1850 the popu1ation had increased to 4,465; in 1870, to 10,067; 1890, to 16,625; 1920 to 20,727.
In 1817 Mississippi became the twentieth state to enter the union; therefore, the first federal population census available is that of 1820.

Hugh Bill McGuire and I remember my uncle Millage Hollingsworth telling that Elansom Green Everett was the first president of the Newton County Sacred Harp Convention, was not reappointed for the second year in its existence, but then returned in that position for another 50 years and only relinquished the position with his death.
Many of the Newton County singers seldom if ever ventured to other parts of the state to sing, but my Uncle Millage was always eager to go and he wanted someone to do with him and I was the most eager candidate.
