Newtown Station opened in 1855, as one of the original four intermediate stations on the Sydney to Parramatta rail line (the others being Ashfield, Burwood, and Homebush), and it was soon serviced by ten steam trains per day.
To the north of Newtown is the suburb of Camperdown; to the east is Darlington (now largely occupied by Sydney University) and Glebe; to the south-east is Macdonaldtown and Erskineville, to the south-west is Enmore, and to the west is Stanmore.

Sydney Uni is a good walk from Redfern railway station (but not impossible), but bus is the best form of transport - and there's plenty of them.
Note that it would probably be a five-or-ten-minute bus ride to the Uni of Sydney.
There's a well-regarded BandB in Margo's other favoured suburb, Newtown, but off-hand I can't think of the name of it; I will post what I have, and maybe get back onto this thread a little later.

SYDNEY — Two solid rows of police, including some on horseback, confronted 300 people who gathered outside Newtown railway station here on December 16 for a Reclaim the Streets street party, encircling them and forcing them almost a kilometre down the street.
The protest organiser, the Sydney RTS Collective, is one of many around the world which agitates for car-free streets, better public transport and minimisation of greenhouse gas emissions by taking over public streets, blocking traffic and organising lively street parties.
Despite the police harassment, people maintained their street party and protest in Newtown and were later “escorted” by police to the Broadway squats, three kilometres away, where the party continued throughout the night.
