With Next, Journey began to break away from the jazzy, progressive-rock inclinations that dominated their first two albums, yet they showed the inclinations throughout this album toward hard rock, mixed with fusion.
Midway through the tour for this album, Journey were told by CBS to either change or be dropped from the label.
Next, marks Journeys last attempt at progressive music, it was the bands third such release, and showed they were maturing as songwriters and innovators as well.

Die-hard fans remained true and eagerly anticipated this next release, and the first indicators are that it was worth the wait.
Journey has always had a lethal combination of spirited lyrics sung in a bare-bones honest fashion by Perry, while Schon's guitar influenced by blues, folk and Jimi Hendrix lead the way in a rocking fashion.
This is a typical Journey effort in the sense of the types of music contained on the disc.

Journey's third album, Next, was released in 1977 (see 1977 in music).
Journey continued the formula from 1976's "Look Into the Future" but this album contains less lengthy compositions, though it still retains much of Journey's jazz-flavored progressiveness from the first two albums.
Songs include the opening, moody number, "Spaceman", as well as standout rocker "Hustler", and the instrumental "Nickel and Dime", the latter of which bears a striking resemblance to Rush's 1981 hit "Tom Sawyer".

Shipwreck Island Studios.com - Album Review 2005 - Acoustic Journey
Acoustic Journey seemed to be a grueling task for Robert (more then a year in the making) to record and release but he stuck in there and fashioned an album that from beginning to end produces some of the most pure musicianship out there.
Now in 2005 we see Rob reinventing himself as his vocals are not as dominant as before but then again I think this is one of his best vocal performances to date with the emotion in his voice just being a main factor in the strength of this CD.
Acoustic Journey is not just another album where an artist tries his hand at unplugged, this is a journey into the mind, body, and soul of Valdes and he has in fact given fans a quality release while at the same time adding a completely new aspect to his career.
