Next, the first major retailer in the country to give an indication of its performance in the run up to Christmas, said on Thursday it expected annual profit before tax to be within a range of 463 million pounds to 473 million pounds.
Next shares were up 0.3 percent at 1,853 pence by 9:30 a.m., outperforming a 0.3 percent fall in the DJ Stoxx index of European retailers.

High street clothing retailer Next is expecting to deliver better than expected pre-tax profits when it publishes its results in March following a positive trading statement for the lead-up to Christmas.
The company said that in the six months ending 24 December, sales for its Next Directory and Next Retail businesses were up by 2.8% compared to the same period in 2005.
Next Directory, the online and catalogue arm of its business, experienced a 9% increase in sales, while figures for its retail division were up by 0.8%.

Although Next had a decent year - with group sales up eight per cent to £3.2 billion for the 12 months to January 27 - its store sales had been a growing concern as the like-for-like numbers again came into negative territory with a fall of 7.2 per cent.
What Next hopes it will deliver is a reduction in the decline in like-for-like sales in the first half of this year to between one and four per cent, and for them to possibly hit positive territory in the second half.
By adding more interest into Next and getting its stores business back on track Wolfson will be hoping that the group will become less reliant on the Directory (mail order and internet) business to impress the City with its sparkling numbers and divert attention away from the poor store sales.
