NeXT was a computer company, known to the public for its series of futuristic computers, and to the programming world for its development platforms.
NeXT merged with Apple Computer in 1997, in a buyout worth approximately $375 million, along with roughly 1.5 million shares of Apple, and no longer does business as a separate entity.
The 68030 was supported by the 68882 FPU for faster math, the 56001 DSP for multi-media work, and two custom-designed 6-channel DMA channel controllers which allowed much of the I/O to be offloaded from the main processor to boost the speed of common tasks.

A working quantum computer could be so powerful that it would solve in seconds certain problems that would take the fastest existing supercomputer millions of years to complete.
A quantum computer would use these dots to take advantage of a quantum phenomenon known as superposition, in which, for example, an electron's spin state would be both up and down at the same time.
Where a classical computer uses an on or off state to represent bits of information in the "zeros" and "ones" of binary code, a quantum computer uses the superposition as qubits.

Steve Jobs & the NeXT Big Thing
As histories are written about the births, lives, and deaths of computer companies during the early computer age, one of the most interesting stories could be the short life of NeXT Computers.
Jobs' vision for the NeXT computer was that of a "mainframe on a desk." His original design was for a workstation that college students would buy.
Despite all the capital investments and despite the potential of the NeXT computer, the system was "yesterday's technology tomorrow for twice the price." It was too expensive for the college market, priced at about $4,000 a cube.

We’ve built NeXT computers to handle even the most complex tasks efficiently, Rather than basing them on traditional PC or workstation architectures, we used a DMA architecture similar to that of mainframe computers (which are known for their superior system throughput.) The result is that NeXT computers offer exceptional system throughput and performance.

For the average purchaser, leasing computer equipment is a very expensive way to finance, and with no real benefits.
Most would be better off simply paying cash for a computer, or financing on a lower-interest rate credit card, and then selling the equipment, or donating to a charity, when it's outlived its useful life.
With many fine machines available for near or under $1,000 and often at zero financing for six months or a year, and the fact that most 1999 models come equipped with Y2K compatibility, there is little reason not to buy to own.

The concept of using multiple, stand alone microprocessors in a computer isn't new either -- Apple Computer Inc. and other vendors have sold dual- and multiprocessor machines for years.

Despite the slower clock speeds compared with single-core chips, the new processors are well suited for computer users who run multiple programs at once.

Gelernter is referring to the "desktop metaphor"-the term frequently used for the hierarchical system of files, folders and icons that we use to manage information stored on our home or office computers.
Scopeware is far more sweeping than a simple rearrangement of icons, however: in effect, it transfers the role of file clerk from you to the computer, seamlessly ordering documents of all sorts into convenient, time-stamped files.
Indeed, the product that brought the metaphor to mass-market attention was Apple Computer's 1984 Macintosh; it had no built-in hard drive, and its floppy disks each stored only 400 kilobytes of information.
