Marsh is renowned for her skill at creating both memorable characters and settings, and she often gives her novels a theatrical background; it was world she knew well, and she digs her nails into every scrap of it.
But Marsh's plots are not always the equal of her literary skill, and this is somewhat true of FALSE SCENT; although the novel is tremendous fun, a good many readers will spot the killer midway through the book.
Ngaio Marsh's books appear to best advantage when performed rather than simply read (possibly her work as a playwright makes the dialogue specially effective that way).

Marsh on the other hand, though her characters were supposed to be British, did not realistically convey her portrayal of the upper-class Ancred family from a native's perspectives.
In this aspect, it was unfortunate for Marsh that she was a New Zealander and a first time reader like myself would conclude that was at least partially responsible for her characters not being genuinely British enough.
Marsh never hesitates to let the real and messy emotions of her main characters from entering into the story.

Ngaio Marsh, a died-in-the-wool New Zealander, wrote more than thirty polished, quintessentially English detective novels between 1934 and 1982, the year of her death.
Marsh's talent was as varied as her heritage.
Lively, acute, sympathetic, she paints a well balanced portrait of a woman leading a single life who was never alone nor lonely, an Edwardian who followed her muses in a thoroughly modern manner, and a writer who, while invincibly Colonial, celebrated England's Golden Age of mystery as royally as its other Queens of Crime.

gaio Marsh, despite her theatrical and artistic background, was one of the most low-key Golden Age writers.
Also, she does not play strictly fair, since the motives of three of the suspects do not appear till the very end of the investigation and could not be extrapolated from the previous material.
Marsh was clearly a masterful writer, in that the details of the crime are well conceived, and the characters are really shown to us rather than merely described; but I'd definitely have to put this book in the "respect but not love" category.
