Ngaro Aboriginal group Airlie Beach Whitsundays   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The Ngaro are one of the earliest recorded Aboriginal groups in Australia.
The Ngaro were often called the `Island People', as their territory extended north - south along the island chain which make up the Cumberland Group.
While the Ngaro people occupied much of the land that we know today as the Whitsunday Islands, similarities to aborigines living in the Proserpine region suggests that possible trade links existed between the coast and the hinterland.

The Ngaro people see the festival as a way for local and visiting indigenous people to share stories about their family's connection with the region both on the mainland and the islands, and appreciate its cultural significance.
Despite the development around the region, the Ngaro people say the festival is a way for people to see the area through their eyes.
According to local historian, John Bates, the Ngaro people were actually mainlanders until the island actually split from the coast.

The Healing Summit 2000 - Australia
Peace was experienced by all and the Aboriginal Ngaro Elder of this area, a woman, sang the blessing for us.
The 'Weave' that was created by this Summit, led by Penny McManigal was given to Renarta 'Gutha'Prior, the Ngaro Aboriginal Elder, of this area, which includes all the islands of the Whitsundays.
Giving our co-created "Weave" to the Aboriginal Ngaro Peoples seemed to be a wondrous "new beginning" for its ultimate purpose, which is the Process of Peoples coming together to contribute their own individuality to the co-creation of a visual metaphor for our shared home, the planet.

You'll also get the chance to meet with descendants of the Ngaro and talk to local writers, historians and archaeologists who have researched their ancestor's lifestyle, a lifestyle more ancient than the pyramids of Egypt!
Also the festival is showing 2 classic fl and white Feature Films, which were box office hits at the time, depicting life in the islands in the 20's and 50's.
