20km northwest of Hamilton is Ngaruawahia, once capital of a Maori kingdom of the Waikato tribes, where Chief Te Wherowhero was elected king as Potatau I in 1858.
A new king or queen is elected in a solemn ceremonial at the end of the tangi mourning ceremonies for the dead ruler, in the presence of the body on its bier.
During the land wars, which rapidly spread from Taranaki to the Waikato area, it became evident that the situation of the royal residence at the two rivers was a source of danger rather than security.

Ngaruawahia is situated at the junction of the Waikato and Waipa Rivers in the central Waikato basin.
In 1858 Te Wherowhero was invested at Ngaruawahia as Maori King with the title Potatau I. During the Waikato War the village was fortified with extensive earthworks to repel the advance of the force commanded by General Sir Duncan Cameron.
In 1867 Ngaruawahia, then called Newcastle, was made a highway district; in 1871 it became a town district; and in 1920 it was constituted a borough.

The 75 year old Queen of the Maori population, making up approximately 15 per cent of the indigenous population of New Zealand, Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu, died on Tuesday, August 15th, at her residence in Turangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawahia, New Zealand, in the presence of her husband Whatumoana Paki and her seven children.
According to the records, Queen Te Ata, as she was nicknamed, was the longest serving royal of the Kingitanga (King) movement, which officially opposed the colonization of the Maori-controlled land by the European, especially British, settlers.
In addition to that she was the seventh Maori sovereign, ruling the Maori population for 40 years, being a direct descendant of the royal family that began governing the Maori in 1858, in response to the British colonization of New Zealand.
