Ngāti Maniapoto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ngati Maniapoto are an iwi (tribe) based in the Waikato-Waitomo region of New Zealand's North Island.
There are many sacred places in the Maniapoto area, the most notable being the principal marae (sacred place) of Ngati Maniapoto is considered to be Te Tokanga Nui A Noho[2] at Te Kuiti in the King Country.
The Ngati Maniapoto were involved the land wars (1845-72), and the Waikato-Waitomo or Nehenehenui region which they controlled was often a retreating point for allied iwis to fall back to after being pushed south by British forces.

Ngati Tama were well-versed, expert perhaps, in the language and intricacies of Treaty settlement, including the complex redress mechanisms which form part of a settlement package.
Ngati Maniapoto never really asserted interests in specific sites, a likely consequence of ill informed understandings of the detail of their claim, understandable given their limited involvement in the process thus far.
Ngati Maniapoto's claim was a hiccup in that process and Ngati Tama were quite understandably uptight to only now be subjected to such scrutiny, and at the 'eleventh hour'.

Ngati Maniapoto fought beside Taranaki people to defeat imperial troops at Puke-ta-kauere, near Waitara, on 27 June 1860, and in January 1861 Rewi led an unsuccessful attack on a redoubt at Huirangi.
Te Wahanui became increasingly recognised as the spokesman for Ngati Maniapoto, and Rewi's proposals for a Maori district, almost identical to the boundaries of the King Country, where the lands, the railway and its services would be used to benefit Waikato and Ngati Maniapoto, were not acceptable to his people.

The people of Ngati Tama had witnessed, and experienced, suffering when Parihaka was sacked and looted by Crown troops in 1881, and the people imprisoned or dispersed.
Just as this settlement is a serious attempt by Ngati Tama and the Crown to resolve long-outstanding issues, there is also work to be done by Ngati Tama and Ngati Maniapoto to come to terms with their history, and look for a way to move forward together.

Waitangi Tribunal - About the Reports
The Tribunal considered that, by revising the settlement and by giving a number of undertakings intended to allay Ngati Maniapoto’s concerns about the possible effects of this settlement on their interests, the Crown had conscientiously endeavoured to meet its obligations as a Treaty partner to both Ngati Tama and Ngati Maniapoto.
The Tribunal was also convinced that, if the revised settlement with Ngati Tama were to go ahead, the Crown would retain the capacity to provide adequate and appropriate redress to Ngati Maniapoto when its settlement came to be negotiated.
This site was originally to have been vested in Ngati Tama as part of its settlement, but the Crown subsequently recognised that, because both Ngati Tama and Ngati Maniapoto had strong interests in the site, it would be inappropriate to vest title exclusively in either group.
