In 1990 the then Minister of Conservation made application to the Maori Land Court for the vesting of the ownership of 3780 hectares of the Park in Ngati Porou subject to a conservation covenant and the establishment of a public walkway.
Government cannot reclaim ownership of the mountain if Ngati Porou breaches the agreement, however Ngati Porou can terminate the conservation and public access provisions while retaining ownership of the land if they believe Government to be in 'material failure' of the agreement.
Ngati Porou has not lodged any claim over the area.

In March $2 million in cash was transferred to the Porou Ariki Trust, the mandated iwi organisation for Ngati Porou, while over $33 million-worth of shares and quota went to Ngati Porou Seafoods Ltd, the Ngati Porou asset holding company.

THE strong desire of Ngati Porou to be reunited with their taonga, spread not only throughout New Zealand but the world, was stressed by speakers to the Waitangi Tribunal at Pakirikiri Marae on Monday.
Ngati Porou considered they had cultural ownership of these taonga, irrespective of legal ownership, the tribunal members, headed by Chief Judge Joe Williams, were told.
Te Runanga o Ngati Porou chairman Dr Apirana Mahuika said the meeting was extremely significant for Ngati Porou because they were revisiting the submissions they had already made to the tribunal, particularly in terms of the ownership of the language.

I was privileged to be one of the representatives of Ngati Porou at the late Dame Te Ata-i-Rangikaahu’s tangi and funeral.
The majority of iwi speakers, including Ngati Porou, said clearly and unambiguously that the decision had to be made by Tainui because the Kingitanga Movement belongs to Tainui.
As I said on several occasions at Turangawaewae, while Ngati Porou is not a member tribe of the Kingitanga, it is there to respond, to support and assist if required.

Ngati Porou Hauora Incorporated (NPH) was established as a not-for-profit charitable organisation in 1994 after considerable consultation with local communities.
Ngati Porou Hauora has PHO partnerships with a number of small providers, most of which are based in Gisborne where its breadth of services is not as extensive as on the East Coast.

NGATI Porou will receive the first part of their fisheries assets, worth nearly $35.5 million, now that the runanga has become a Mandated Iwi Organisation (MIO).
TRONP received a 92 percent mandate to establish Porou Ariki Trust as the MIO for Ngati Porou, adopt the trust deed and become the trustee.
"This is a vindication of all the effort and investment that Ngati Porou and other iwi have made over the past 14 years to secure the fisheries assets in the first instance and then to ensure allocation to respective iwi in a timely and efficient manner," said Dr Mahuika.

"Ngati Porou signed a deal with UK-based carbon investors to plant up to 30,000ha of marginal and erosion-prone land with slow-rotation forestry under the Government's permanent forest `sinks' initiative," he said.
